Ukrainian Village
Ukrainian Village is a neighborhood located on the near west side of Chicago. Its boundaries are Division Street to the north, Grand Avenue to the south, Western Avenue to the west, and Damen Avenue to the east. It has one of the largest concentrations of Ukrainians in the United States, hence the name. There are several churches within Ukrainian Village, with three located on one street. St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral was the first of the two Ukrainian Greek Catholic churches in the village. Ss. Volodymyr and Olha Ukrainian Catholic Church formed in the 1970s. Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Cathedral was the first Eastern European Russian Orthodox church to be built, it was commissioned by St. John Kochurov and designed by famed architect Louis Sullivan. The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art is also on the same street, Chicago Ave., which runs through the neighborhood. Only a block away is the Ukrainian National Museum that celebrates the rich history and culture. Chicago Ave also is home to many great restaurants, galleries and coffee shops.
